We had a little flurry of ‘Feasts and Fables’ playlists ... I think my favourite is Feasts and Fables III a classical compilation for Sunday mornings. We should maybe create a couple of new ones. The writing exercise is very creative. I’ll bookmark this and see if a moment pops up to have a gentle go. Hendrix went too early ... and Prince. You wonder what music they’d be making now. Oh, and I’m not a listener to music when I’m walking sort of soul - but I do remember how it helped with marathon training to have some sounds for company. Lovely post.

Thanks Barrie! And you should definitely make another playlist. Feast and Fables IV is waiting to be discovered.

I’ll hope you enjoy the writing exercise and manage to get something from it. I find myself wondering what David Bowie would have done next. He constantly reinvented himself. I’d have loved to see what he transformed into.

Thanks for the mention here Sarah, means a lot! I've been in a long phase of listening to podcasts rather than music while I walk, but I need to get back to music one day – it can be a lot more enriching. Also find it gets imprinted on whichever landscape you're walking – you start to associate a particular view with a song you had playing at the time, the same way certain smells can trigger childhood memories.

I feel that way about a lot of music. The old playlist I mention in my post, Walk The City, feels very much like that. Probably because I played it so often while I was in San Francisco.

What fun! When I was researching my book and really getting into the biology of how walking uses our brains as well as our bodies, music was something I began to notice more. Like I was at a gym once and realized I couldn’t run because someone else’s music was too loud and it messed up my gait. Music really shows us, subtly, how much of the brain is involved in walking.

Thank you! That's so interesting about the biology side of walking and our brains. I used to have a gym mix (back when I used to go the gym) and preferred listening to that when I was on the treadmill, too. There's obviously some science behind the reason why!

There is! Linked to why our gait is more individually distinctive than fingerprints probably, too.

This gets more interesting by the second! I've ordered your book and I'm looking forward to learning more about all of this. Thanks!

Oh, cool! Though I should say I think that particular detail I left out. I can't remember. 😂 But people have been working on mobile phone technology that unlocks your phone through your gait, since it's more individual than fingerprints. (This is also an issue for privacy and surveillance--people can be identified on video through their walk, even if their faces are covered.)
